Description
Handwritten preface signed by André Breton, dated 25 January 1956, for an exhibition of Marcelle Loubchansky's work at the Galerie Kléber.
In this preface to the exhibition organised by the Galerie Kléber in January 1956, Breton invokes Empedocles to help him understand Marcelle Loubchansky's work more closely. Two years earlier, through Charles Estienne, he had discovered the abstract work of this artist, whose originality he endeavoured to bring to light by freeing it from the stereotypical readings that the concept of abstract painting would seem to authorise. In fact, the quotation from the Traité de la nature (On Nature) clearly situates the artist's work in a relationship with nature that forces us to go beyond the sterile opposition between abstraction and realism. The text, which is reminiscent of the similar work carried out on Riopelle's work, was included in the definitive edition of Le Surréalisme et la peinture (Surrealism and Painting), in 1965. "No one has been more adept at liberating and giving full expression to these forms, which come from the depths of the earth and ‘share characteristics both of humidity and of flame’ and which attest to a new gestation. She can hold the privilege of unfolding before our eyes, in all its splendour, the changing and mellifluous fringe through which a bygone age anticipates the age to come... Marcelle Loubchansky today lifts the veil and it is a breath of freshness that rises from her works, restoring to us the pure gaze of childhood, where the wonders of the aurora borealis are combined with those of the multi-coloured robe of time.” [Sale Catalogue, 2003]
