Description
In an article entitled "Charles Filiger", which appeared in 1895 n° IV-V of Le cœur, Antoine de la Rochefoucauld pointed out that Filiger had sent La Vierge entourée de deux anges to the Salon de la Rose + Croix, at the Galerie Durand Ruel.
According to him, the artist had invented the Virgin in an entirely new form, a personification of "good principle", "which serves as the sacred tie between the man who has strayed from the path and the God of Justice. She is greater, more magnificent in her total absence of earthly humanity than the most beautiful of creatures which up until now have been deified by painters and sculptors...
"The décor used for the Virgin is admirable for the (other) holy figures. To the most beautiful lines selected to represent them, the essence of a landscape, also in ethereal lines, had to be conjoined; Filiger thus placed his holy figures on a background of arabesques-suggesting only the direction and overall shape of the sea and rocks, which are painted in closely related tones to harmonize like those of a mosaic or antique stained glass."
