Manuscript of the lecture from January 11th, 1946; second of the eight given by André Breton in Haiti.

Arrived in Port-au-Prince with Elisa on December 4th, 1945, Breton gave a series of lectures beginning from December 20th. He had planned eleven lectures, but gave only eight. Here we have the draft of the second, published in Inédits I in the third volume of the Pléiade. This “genealogy tree of Romanticism” presents some German authors which were little known at that time (as Novalis and Achim von Arnim) and focuses on the unknown forbears, particularly on those linked with the hermetic and occultist tradition revived notably in Hugo and Nerval. “It is not betraying any great secret to say that most of the living authors and artists, when listing the cultural heritage of France, are very far from sharing the opinion of most of the teachers of the last two years of high school. With very few exceptions, I always saw them disagree with the idea that the 17th century was doubtless the period culminating in a curve leading towards the staggering decline at the end of the 19th century. For me, I should think that the contrary is true. Without going as far as to underestimate the purity of the language and the high human accents of Racine, let alone the genius of Pascal, I declare that a century of culture, to claim the epithet “great,” must be able to put forth much more convincing arguments than the emancipative virtue of a Boileau and of a La Fontaine. […]

“I have drawn attention again and again to the extraordinary growth of the English novel at the end of the 13th century, known as the terrifying novel, gothic novel, or black novel, and to the extraordinary fascination that this literary genre has later impressed on the most serious minds. The first novels by Victor Hugo along with those by Balzac are directly inspired by Lewis’ Le Moine and Maturin’s Melmoth, the same Melmoth to which Baudelaire referred so often and which became in Les Nuits d'Young a vital source of inspiration for Lautréamont.”

Tapuscrit d'une notice destinée au catalogue de l'exposition L'Écart absolu, daté 18 juillet 1965.

Chargé de la « Mécanique de grabuge » dans la préparation de l'exposition L'Écart absolu, José Pierre envoie ces trois lettres (et les textes afférents) à Breton au cours de l'été 1965. Il y évoque les questions habituelles : confection du catalogue, œuvres et artistes à solliciter, tout en communiquant à Breton diverses pièces de sa correspondance. On notera la présence du manuscrit d'une notice destinée au catalogue : « Changer la femme », au titre d'inspiration rimbaldienne, et qui fait référence à la Juliette de Sade et à l'Ellen du Surmâle. À partir d'une phrase provocante issue du Surmâle d'Alfred Jarry, José Pierre invoque Sade et Breton pour définir la femme selon les Surréalistes - « Les poètes s'efforcent à composer peu à peu le vrai visage de la femme, non pour le lui imposer comme un vêtement "prêt à porter", mais pour l'aider à se libérer enfin, y compris d'eux-mêmes et de leurs rêves... » et introduire l'exposition L'Écart absolu. Day and its opposite: ‘the spark of a love, a stroke of genius’, a crime, in short anything that can pierce the everyday and bring about something new – that never-before-seen whose revelation Breton demands from painting. But what is also the opposite of day is night, and through this the realm of dreams – that nocturnal domain that Breton accuses Magritte of having abandoned in favour of the sunshine.
Undated and unsigned, this text is part of the dossier brought together for the definitive edition of Surrealism and Painting in 1965. Its location in this dossier allows us to presume that it might date from 1954 or 1955. [Atelier André Breton website, 2005]

‘The day dawns; one of yours just as it is one of mine. Nothing to be done, at least in the current circumstances poets stand against the day. Who among them said: “Must the morning always be reborn? Will the domination of the terrestrial know no end? A fateful venture delays the celestial arrival of Night. Can the hidden sacrifice of Love not burn for ever? A limited duration was allotted to day; but Night’s domination knows neither time nor space”.
