Manuscript of dream phrases signed by André Breton and dated May 1953 and April 1956.
‘In the sands of dream there will always be a shovel in the wind.’ Again taking up some striking sentences like those in 1924 he said had ‘tapped at the window’, in 1960 Breton presented a kind of anthology of these strange sayings that appear in the course of a dream or upon awakening. The collection, entitled Le La, would be published in November 1961 in P.-A.B. editions, in Alès, with a lithograph by Jean Benoît.
The scraps of the manuscript gathered here are of interest in giving clues as to how Breton materially conceived this work of bibliophilia. So we have the different states of a collection conceived as a beautiful object, the wager of which would be to highlight and emphasise the singular strength of each of the sentences.
