Description

A letter from Roland Penrose to André Breton dated 10 February 1947 in London.

The ‘great transparents’: inspired by Duchamp's Large Glass, the great transparents were a kind of recurring myth for the surrealists and in particular for Breton in the 1940s (see an article on the subject published in the catalogue of the exhibition André Breton. La beauté convulsive). It was therefore quite logical that this object was given a cult status at the 1947 International Surrealist Exhibition. Sign of Aquarius; associated stone, obviously, the diamond. Roland Penrose, who says in a letter attached to the file ‘fascinated’ by the idea, participates in the design of the altar. Péret, perhaps in remembrance of the elements of Christian communion, proposes Great Transparents charcoal and red wine. [Atelier André Breton website, 2003]

Folder titled by André Breton of one of the 12 altars of the surrealist exhibition at the Galerie Maeght in 1947 (the whole under a ribbon folder titled by André Breton).
Handwritten letter signed by Roland Penrose addressed to André Breton, 4 pages in-12, accompanied by 2 original sketches in ink, in the format of the letter (envelope kept).

‘I am enchanted by the fashionable tiger and have nothing to add to Jacques' scheme except to give the Hindu image of the frightful blue-coloured goddess Kali with her ornament of skulls and snakes on the body of her husband Siva who is dressed in a tiger skin.’ [sale catalogue, 2003]
