Description

Text accompanying a comic strip to be published in Arts from 28 December 1951 to 8 February 1952.

From 28 December 1951, readers of Arts were introduced to a kind of comic strip, arranged in vertical columns. The artist was Braig and the scriptwriters, André Breton and Benjamin Péret, two beginners who were not without talent... This ‘Illustrated Life of Pablo Picasso’ borrows as much from the genre invented nearly a century earlier by Christophe as it does from the medieval vitae of Jacques de Voragine and the stained glass windows of cathedrals. Taking a biographical approach, as opposed to a scholarly reading, allows us to view the work from the inside, as it were, by taking account of the others, friends who were sometimes surprised by certain of the saint’s gestures… This small dossier includes some of Braig's illustrations, which were not included in the Pléiade collected works (Alentours II, in the third volume). [Atelier André Breton website, 2005]

Printed proofs and handwritten corrections, undated [1951].

A biography of Pablo Picasso written by Benjamin Péret and André Breton, published in the weekly magazine Arts to be accompanied by illustrations by Braig.

- Corrected proofs in Breton's hand of the magazine Arts reproducing the first episode of Péret and Breton's text, ‘The Illustrated Life of Pablo Picasso: From Malaga to Montmartre’, with illustrations by Braig (2 pages large in-4°).

The text of the journal Arts reproduces the corresponding manuscript verbatim, with a few variants and additions. [Auction Catalogue, 2003]
