Author André Breton
Letter to Inconnu
Description
Handwritten letter from André Breton to an unknown woman, dated 19 March 1931.
To whom is this letter addressed? Perhaps to Lise Deharme, whose coquetry Breton eventually forgot; or to another of his friends. Note the light-hearted but original definition of Surrealism as “the art of marvels” and his signature in the form of ‘1713’. [Atelier André Breton website, 2005]
Autograph manuscript, 19 March 1931.
- 1 in-4° autograph page in ink, signed, on blue paper with erasures and corrections, to a “Dear Madam” and dated Paris, 19 March 1931:
“Are you happy? I suppose so, not hearing any more about you, who used to be so noisy. Zebra crossings were definitely made for rubber soles.”
Unpublished letter. [Auction Catalogue, 2003]
