Letter to Max Walter Svanberg

Description

Letter from André Breton to Max Walter Svanberg dated 18 May 1954.

Max Walter Svanberg (lacking an ‘s’, Breton made a mistake in his letter) was born in 1912 in Malmö (Sweden). Breton and his friends discovered his work in 1953. Issue 3 of the surrealist Journal Médium (1954) was illustrated by him and in 1955 Breton prefaced his first individual exhibition in Paris at the gallery ‘À l’Étoile scellée’. He died in 1994. José Pierre devoted an important work to him, Max Walter Svanberg et le règne féminin, prefaced by Breton (Paris, Le musée de poche, 1975).
On 18 May 1954: Breton sent Svanberg this letter with questions about the publication of the Swedish painter’s engravings in Médium: we see the poet, who has practically never stopped also being an editor, discussing technical problems (format of reproductions, weight of paper), while settling material details such as the copies to be sent to the artist and the sale of his works. [Atelier André Breton website, 2005]

Signed hand written letter, Paris, 18 May 1954
2 pages in-4°, handwritten, dated and signed by Breton in ink, with some corrections, relating to Svanberg's illustrations for the journal Médium:
‘Dearest Max Walter, the prints of the engraving you sent me for the collection on reverie are magnificent. The work is in process... I received your five drawings for Médium with great pleasure. I’ve chosen them with love and several of our friends are delighted at the idea of acquiring them at the prices you proposed to me... We all wish your exhibition in Malmö the greatest success...’ [auction catalogue, 2003]
