Description
Handwritten lists of names of artists, writers and paintings, undated (circa 1962).
Between two invitations, these are lists intended for the 1955 republication of the two manifestoes of Surrealism [sic]. In addition to portraits of his friends and some of the people mentioned in the texts, there are lists of paintings to which André Breton attached such importance that he wanted them reproduced; these latter lists were perhaps intended for Sabine Weiss's photographic reportage illustrating Alain Jouffroy's feature published in L'œil in the autumn of 1955. [(sic) Atelier André Breton website, 2005]
Autograph manuscripts, five pages, including two on printed invitations.
On the verso of a card whose recto has not been reproduced:
- 1 page in-16 entitled ‘Portraits’ handwritten in ink by Breton, listing surrealist friends, poets, painters and sculptors (from Aragon to Vaché).
On the verso of an invitation to a Matta exhibition for Monday 19 February 1962:
- 1 page in-16, handwritten in ink by Breton, of a list similar to the previous one, but in a different order.
On the back of an invitation to the Mexican Embassy on Friday 30 March 1962:
- 1 in-16 text titled ‘To photograph rue Fontaine’, handwritten in ink and pencil by Breton, listing paintings belonging to him to be photographed. [André Breton website, 2018 - thanks to Pradial Peralta].
