Notes for a text published in the ‘Mexican Lectures’ (1938) gathered for the Inédits II section of the second volume of the Pléiade complete works.
These notes taken from a notebook were no doubt intended for the preparation of a lecture in Mexico, in May 1938, on Luis Buñuel’s and Salvador Dalí’s film Un Chien andalou, a lecture whose text was published in the Inédits II section of the second volume of the Pléiade complete works. If the final text remains very broad in scope, offering interesting insights into cinema, in contrast the notes are very specific, paying attention to the film’s narrative framework and picking out specific scenes. - 3 in-18 independent pages from a notebook of manuscript notes by Breton in blue ink; in them he describes the first 20 shots of the film ‘Un Chien andalou’ by Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí:
‘Shot 20 overview of the scene relat.[ive] to the psychol.[ogical] overv.[iew].
- Exter.[ior] sea. – Cold winter day – view into the distance
- Prol.[ogue] 5 sh.[ots]. The new buyers come to buy the château
- Un chien andalou. A balcony at night. The man looks at the sky and sees ... [a narrow cloud advancing towards the full moon]. Then the head of a y. w. [young woman] with her eyes wide open. A razor blade advances towards one of them.
- Now the narrow cloud passes in fr.[ont] of the moon…’. [Auction catalogue, 2003]
