A dossier in preparation for one of the 12 altars planned for the exhibition Le Surréalisme en 1947.
This ‘Worldly Tiger’ (Tigre mondain) ‘wears a monocle’ and, associated with agate and Aries, would be consecrated as the first altar of the International Surrealist Exhibition of 1947; in this project partly drafted in Breton’s hand, we learn to our dismay that it is fed on copper sulphate covered in flies! It’s true that the idea comes not from a zoologist but a poet: Benjamin Péret. [Atelier André Breton website, 2005]
