Leather sheet engraved with a portait of André Breton by Pablo Picasso, made in 1923, the year they met, and later used to make a print in Clair de Terre.
The year they meet, in 1923, Picasso engraves a portrait of Breton to illustrate Clair de Terre, a collection of essays written and edited by André Breton and dedicated to his friends, the surrealist poets and artists. He dedicates the last poem, "Le soleil en laisse", to Picasso.
Picasso is close to the surrealists without ever really being part of the group.
Breton quickly realizes the importance of Picasso's work. In "Surrealism and Painting," a review of the surrealist movement published in 1925, amidst the surrealist revolution, Breton declares: "If surrealism must chart itself a moral line of conduct, it needs only find where Picasso has gone and where he will pass again."
