Handwritten manuscript by André Breton, dated 5 April 1931, in a folder titled ‘Manuscripts Dreams’.
Dreams... the oldest of which dates from 1931, the most recent from the post-war period; we see figures familiar to Breton at different times, for instance his parents, René Char in the first, Robert Denoël in the third... Part of this text appears in Les Vases communicants and two are quoted in ‘Trajectoire du rêve’ in 1938, but unlike dream stories that were published in various places by Breton or included among the unpublished works in the Oeuvres complètes, these are texts written for his own use, without any literary consideration; moreover, they are marked by a character of clear sense of intimacy and some are accompanied by drawings, which together give them an ‘extra-literary’ character - even this word should be used with care when speaking about the surrealists. Let’s say in any case that they don’t lend themselves well to literary form, at least not without being greatly reworked and thus denatured. [Atelier André Breton website, 2005]

- I’d gone to bed very sadly], 1 1/2 pages in-4°, Hand-written text of a dream of Breton of 5 April 1931, with erasures and corrections.
‘It’s evening and someone who is sometimes Valentin and sometimes Char guides us, perhaps under the pretext of attending a film being shot around a kind of castle that a little later turns out to be located in the immediate vicinity of Lorient. We make our way to a soaked ground where we soon find ourselves with water up to our ankles... There are a lot of creepers above (in the air) in which a very beautiful fish in the shape of a spindle with a very metallic purple and fire glow is making its way. I chase after it but it increases its speed.’ [sale catalogue, 2003]
