Description
Manuscript of a preface by André Breton for an exhibition of Gerome Kamrowski presented at the Greuze Gallery from 6 to 21 January 1950.
Having met Gerome Kamrowski in New York during his years of exile, Breton was one of the first to recognise and praise the artist’s originality, in his view was inseparable from a certain detachment from the market system. Breton recognises a "world of grasping and capturing" in the painter's work, seeing it in flux, energised by a natural energy that gives it its rhythm. Influenced by Surrealism even before the arrival of the surrealists exiled in New York, Kamrowski quickly evolved towards what became known as Abstract Expressionism. Breton's text was written for Kamrowski's solo exhibition at the Greuze Gallery in January 1950. It was later reprinted in Le Surréalisme et la peinture (Surrealism and Painting) in 1965. Autograph manuscript, undated [1950].
- 1 page in-4° titled and handwritten in ink by André Breton with erasures and corrections, of this text about the painter Gerome Kamrowski:
"Of all the very young painters whose progress I was able to follow in New York during the last years of the war, it was Gerome Kamrowski, by far, who captivated me the most with the quality and sustained character of his research." [Sale Catalogue, 2003]
This preface would be included in the second edition of Le Surréalisme et la peinture in 1965; it was written for an exhibition that took place in 1950, in Paris. [Atelier André Breton website, 2014]
