Handwritten notes by André Breton on the back of an envelope and invitation card, undated.
"The occult is what exists that we are not informed about. So let's get informed! From informal notes to a more structured draft, Breton put together a survey project on India, Japan and China, based on newspapers from 1954: who are the Chinese, Japanese and Indians, what do they read, what do they do, what do they eat? Breton’s adherence a few years earlier to the ‘Citizens of the World’ movement here makes an unexpected reappearance, with a much less abstract attention to humanity in all its diversity, reminiscent of the travel diaries he kept while visiting the Hopi Indians.
