Description
Manuscript of a text published in Médium, no. 4, January 1955 concerning the death of Vyshinsky.
‘The hyena among hyenas’: the Hebrew superlative isn’t an overstatement in vilifying Andrey Vyshinsky, a Soviet official whose death was commemorated by all the communist press in grandiose terms at the end of 1954. In this furious note co-authored with Benjamin Péret and published in Médium (new series, no. 4), Breton renders justice to this whole rhetoric and gives a blunt reminder of a few truths. Handwritten manuscript, undated.
- 1/4 page in-4°, first draft of a handwritten manuscript by André Breton with deletions and corrections of this text published in Médium, no. 4, January 1955 relating to the death of Vyshinsky:
‘The murderer of Lenin’s companions, defiler of October, one world, the only one it might be desirable to inhabit, separates those who appreciated his “eloquence” and those who were happy to finally see the hyena among hyenas laid low.’ [Auction catalogue, 2003]
According to É.-A. Hubert, through this article in Médium Breton was responding to the ‘accommodating’ articles in Le Monde about Stalin’s State Prosecutor of the Moscow Trials. Will any reader able to confirm this be kind enough to correct this entry?
Thanks to Fabrice Pascaud, issue 4 of Médium is available as a (rather large file size) PDF. [Atelier André Breton website, 2015]
