Description

Manuscript signed by André Breton, dated 27 March 1960. Moréas, Maurras, the same fight: responding in March 1960 to an enquiry in Le Figaro on the poet of Les Stances, Breton was quite scathing towards the bard of the Romanesque school. Associating the "poetic regression" that Moreas represents with the name of Charles Maurras is undoubtedly even more violent than it is today, due to the fact that in 1960 the monarchist theorist, now somewhat forgotten, was associated in everyone's mind with the Vichy regime and with Nazi collaboration. [Atelier Breton website, 2005] Autograph manuscript signed and dated 27 March 1960. 1/2 page in-4° handwritten, titled, dated and signed in ink by Breton, with a few erasures and corrections, of a text in response to Le Figaro's enquiry: "Do you read Moréas and what does he represent for you, as a poetry-lover?” "I find the character of Moréas fundamentally unsympathetic. He is the very type of a self-infatuated being. I also find his theoretical contribution detestable. In relation to Symbolism as a great spiritual adventure and the development of a new form, he is a turncoat.” [Auction Catalogue, 2003]
