Description
Manuscripts of an interview with André Breton for the journal Indice in May 1935, and included in Position politique du surréalisme.
Prepared for a short-lived Canary Islands left-wing journal, this interview, entitled Interview with Indice was included in Position politique du surréalisme. Continuing the reflections carried out in Prague, Breton affirms the existence of a revolutionary (or at least dissident) art that doesn’t allow itself to be reduced to lessons of political discourse, and in the same way assimilates the ‘social element’, but doesn’t constitute its trace. For the poet it should be a way of reaffirming the revolutionary vocation of the art, and of the surrealism in particular, and the impossibility of leaving it in prey to the orders of a party or a cause. To the end of his life, Breton will uphold this position, which had been definitively formulated in 1932 at the time of the polemic with Aragon. [Atelier André Breton website, 2005]
Handwritten manuscripts, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, May 1935.
- Santa Cruz de Tenerife, May 1935. Manuscript in red and blue ink of four folio pages on white paper, with erasures and corrections, titled and dated by Breton, constituting the complete text of the six questions (in blue ink) and the six answers (in red ink) of the interview conducted for the magazine Indice, a socialist cultural journal in Tenerife. The journal was apparently unable to publish the interview as it ceased publication in April 1935.
Attached is the handwritten manuscript of the first draft of most of the interview for Indice, four pages in green ink and black pencil in Breton's hand, with numerous erasures and corrections. [sale catalogue, 2003]
