Handwritten text by André Breton inserted in the volume The Interpretation of Dreams (Published by Felix Alcan, 31 December 1926). It largely provides the basis for the writing of the first part of Vases communicants , published in 1932.
This notebook attests the writer's strong interest in reading Freud's classic Interpretation of Dreams; one passage about repression is even marked ‘Very good’ - there is a certain piquancy in the fact that it is written on paper from a school notebook. Breton had read Freud’s On Dreams in 1925. His notes on The Interpretation of Dreams can therefore be situated sometime between 1927 and 1931, when he was preparing Les Vases communicants, of which these notes constitute some of the raw material used in its first part. [Atelier André Breton website, 2003] Hand-written manuscript, sd [1927 - 1931].
Hand-written manuscript, sd [1927 - 1931].
- In a school notebook known as ‘La Girafe’. 19 pages in-8°, manuscript titled ‘La Science des rêves’ with a few erasures and corrections where Breton summarizes numerous passages from Freud's book, some of which are quoted in Les Vases communicants. (The first cover of the notebook is cracked, without affecting the notes made by Breton on the back).
