Handwritten notes made by Breton during his stay in Martinique and published in Pour la victoire in New York in February 1942.

‘Troubled Waters,’ this precise and well-documented section of Martinique charmeuse de serpents constitutes a kind of hapax in Breton's work, an exciting foray into the realm of the documentary not unlike the ‘Passage du panorama’ in Aragon's Paris Peasant. This ambition is based on methodical work mainly carried out in 1941 during Breton's first stay on the island. The notes gathered here and which appear here in their raw state allow us to specify its phases, making the central figure of the planter Aubéry, chosen by the poet to embody the corruption of the island, appear more and more clearly.
