"Having practiced resolutely non-figurative painting over several years, the young Austrian painter Wolfgang Paalen was won over by Surrealism around 1935... In 1938, he created a new "automatic" process know as "fumage" which consisted of letting the soot from the flame of a candle accumulate on paper or canvas, and afterwards interpreting the meaning of the deposits." Guy Habasque (Paris, Galerie de l'œil, Minotaure, 1962, s.p.)
