Description

Invitation card from Jean Benoît to André Breton dated 2 December 1959.

This isolated fragment is part of a text recounting the performance - in the presence of a few friends, including the writer Annie Le Brun and the photographer Gilles Ehrmann - of the funeral rites that the Marquis de Sade wanted but were never carried out for him, that is until then. It was on 2 December 1959 that the ‘Grand Ceremony’ finally took place, on the initiative of the Canadian artist Jean Benoît. The same evening saw the reinstatement of Matta within the surrealist group. Enthused, Breton wrote a text that was to preface the EROS exhibition held from 15 December at the Daniel Cordier gallery, before being included in the definitive edition of LeSurréalisme et la peinture (Surrealism and Painting), in 1965. A few copies of a book of photographs would also be printed to commemorate the event. [Atelier André Breton website, 2005]
