Breton’s handwritten notes from May 1958 concerning a demonstration against the Algerian war.
Probably intended for an English audience, as the invocation of ‘our English friends’ and especially the deliberate anglicism (use of the word ‘demonstration’ rather than ‘manifestation’) would attest, this statement from May 1958 is presented as a commentary on the events as they occurred: Breton exalts popular energy and refers to 1793, denounces the servility of the press and proposes that we should mistrust personal power.
