Description

André Breton's handwritten publicity notice for Poèmes published in 1948.

The printers proofs for André Breton's Poèmes were signed off on November 20, 1948 and the book published at the beginning of 1949. Wrapped in a paper band with the words "Liberté couleur d'homme" [Liberty the colour of mankind], this volume with its minimalist title is accompanied by a publicity notice written by Breton, of which we here have the manuscript. In it, the poet evokes the criticisms of the late Symbolists against him, before tackling the advocates of ‘poésie engagée’ [‘committed poetry’]: a way of attesting to the fact that his work, in the space of thirty years, never ceased to disturb. Autograph manuscript, November 1948.

1 page in-4° handwritten, titled and formatted in blue ink by Breton of the text of the publicity notice for Poèmes, published by Gallimard in 1948:

“About Mont de Piété [Pawnshop] (1919), whose title alone irritated the late distinguished Henri de Régnier to the point of prompting him to suggest to the author, in a literary column, that he entitle his next collection Pomme de terre [‘Apple’]..."
