Maunscript text written at sea on April 10, 1938 and intended to serve as a preface to the exhibition organised at the Renou et Colle gallery at the end of June 1938.

Dedicated to Wolfgang Paalen, this text, written at sea on 10 April 1938, was intended to serve as a preface to the exhibition organised at the Renou et Colle gallery at the end of June 1938. His collection having already been enriched by Paalen’s Orages magnétiques [Magnetic Storms], Breton here draws attention to a new technique - fumage - the effects of which are all the more fascinating as he could see no antecedent in Surrealism. As with Dali ten years earlier, the movement had found new blood, a revitalisation that came entirely from outside. [Atelier André Breton website, 2005]

"Having practiced resolutely non-figurative painting over several years, the young Austrian painter Wolfgang Paalen was won over by Surrealism around 1935... In 1938, he created a new "automatic" process know as "fumage" which consisted of letting the soot from the flame of a candle accumulate on paper or canvas, and afterwards interpreting the meaning of the deposits."
