Description

Skira quarterly bulletin, issue 4, dated December 1966, with a tribute from Albert Skira to André Breton who had recently died.

Following Xavier de Maistre, without a particular order, with this splendid title for a never to be written book: What will my room be like at the journey’s end? The intended subject was the treasures in a certain studio located at 42 rue Fontaine. But Breton's last project, elaborated in complicity with Albert Skira, never appeared. The writer would have included in it reproductions of paintings and objects he owned, or no longer owned, such as Picasso's Head , or the Child's Brain , which had been sold a few years earlier. Perhaps the Atelier André Breton site is the delayed realization of this half-imaginary museum, which we would today call virtual, in a form the poet could not have imagined. Skira illustrated quarterly bulletin, n4, December 1966.
- Preface to the quarterly bulletin Skira To my friend André Breton: 1 copy of the quarterly bulletin Skira issue 4, December 1966 with a text from Albert Skira to the recently deceased André Breton:
‘A few months ago, we were discussing the new collection I proposed to publish in order to highlight the primary sources of creation... Your enthusiasm for this idea touched me greatly. You wanted to write for Les Sentiers de l'art a text about the objects, the paintings that surrounded you...
‘You didn't want to use the title of Xavier de Maistre's Journey Around My Room. And a few days later, you proposed to me: What my room at the end of the journey? But you told me: ‘I don't know if I'll have time to write it’. [sale catalogue, 2003]

Translator's note: Xavier de Maistre (1763-1852) wrote the book Voyage autour de ma chambre in 1794 while under house arrest for having participated in an illegal duel. In it he describes his room in terms of travelogue.
