Portrait of André Breton by Alberto Martini, 1929.
Signed on the lower right: Martini; Inscribed on the back: André Breton
"In 1928, [Martini] begins a visit to Paris which won't end until 1934. There, he undertakes new research with his "téléplastiques" and "psycholoplastic" paintings. He makes them in a state of abandon and artistic fervor, almost one of self-hypnosis and clairvoyance. In 1929 he paints a portrait of Breton, who invites him to enter the Surrealist group. Out of a desire for independence and solitude, he refuses." Giovanni Lista (Adam Biro, René Passeron (director), Dictionnaire général du surréalisme et de ses environs, Fribourg, Office du Livre, 1982, p. 267)
