Letter from André Breton to Jérôme Lindon, then editor at Le Sagittaire, dated 11 December 1951.

December 1951: as the end of the year approaches, Breton takes the opportunity to do his accounts, especially his dealings with the Sagittaire publishing house, whose affairs are quite muddled. He methodically reminds Jérôme Lindon and René Laporte about the figures and agreements he would like to be respected more accurately. A letter to Gaston Gallimard follows, showing how difficult Breton was finding it to get attention at Éditions Gallimard on rue Sébastien-Bottin. [Atelier André Breton website, 2005]

Original handwritten manuscript of the first draft of Arcane 17 written in Québec and signed by André Breton. 20 August - 20 October 1944. Manuscript of the Ajours dated 1 June 1947.

In a cod skin binding made into a speckled, light tan mosaic, with a different hollow cutout on each cover plate revealing a sheet of glass under which is inserted on the front cover a collage made of the photograph of Elisa Breton’s face next to a leaf cut into the shape of a heart. On the back cover, small cutouts of round leaves are hung from a black wire, with the flyleaves and endpapers made of veneer, the spine carrying gold lettering and the casing made of imitation suede paper (Lucienne Talheimer).

Handwritten manuscript, 20 August - 20 October 1944.
- 48-page school notebook with an in-4° format whose right-hand pages are mostly reserved for the handwritten texts and the left-hand pages for photographs and collages of documents or various objects. 

The manuscript begins with an image of a waterfall, no doubt the cover of the notebook, which is titled on the first page and bears the collaged dedication in the form of a calligram against a background of stars from André Breton to Elisa, who inspired Arcane 17.
‘Elisa, you before whom I ceaselessly find again the eyes I had aged 15 for Beata Beatrix, by the forever most luminous star of this 9^th or 10^th December 1943 and by the wing of the beautiful bird of Bonaventure pointing towards your country and when we heard that from mid-August the gannets were leaving for Chile, do you recall how this word kept trembling over the sea – this notebook for the great truancy is for you, my love, André 3 January 1945.’
The elements pasted opposite the text are highly significant, and are in a way the key for a better understanding of Arcane 17. Most of them are commented upon by Breton beneath the collages, whether these are cards, transport tickets, photographs, tobacco packages, a plastic found object or Tarot cards. The manuscript is written in a very tightly-spaced handwriting, including deletions and numerous corrections. It is signed and dated at the end. 
‘In Elisa’s dream, that old gypsy who wanted to kiss me and from whom I was escaping, but that was Bonaventure Island, one of the largest seabird sanctuaries in the world.’

- A 6-page manuscript appendix follows the manuscript of Arcanum 17; it is initialled and dated 1 June 1947; the text ends with the phrase: ‘My only star lives.’

- The amazing binding with its ‘mermaid’ was designed and completed by Lucienne Talheimer, whose work was appreciated by the surrealists and especially by Breton.

Arcane 17 is one of the key works of surrealism and, as René Alleau shows in his remarkable study published in the Centre Pompidou catalogue, the manuscript is evidently ‘the unknown original manuscript of a famous masterpiece’. [Auction catalogue, 2003]

Research on astrology and esoterism. Arcane 17 (Arcanum 17) sees the constant emergence of a culture which Breton intently explores. Browsing through the pages of Court de Gebelin, the illuminist, passionate about the idea of a language of origins, equally tries to interpret the symbols of tarots. The central figures of the Star and of the Woman, Isis of whom Mélusine is a reflection, appear here in blatant erudition, before alchemy would restore them to literature. "Here we have before our eyes an image no less allegorical, and absolutely Egyptian; it is titled the Star. We see, in effect, a brillant start around which are 7 smaller ones. The lower part of the image shows a woman, kneeling, holding two vases upside down, from which two rivers flow." Original drawing in pencil by André Breton representing The Nude Young Woman of the 17th Arcanum. From the Court of Gébelin, the Tarot is considered as an "Egyptian" emblem of life.

Stylised, as sharply defined as genuine traditional tarot cards, but heading completely for the imaginary, and raw in an entirely modern way: that’s the tarot de Marseille revisited by the surrealists, in this instance Matta who follows on from the group of December 1940 – Breton, Jacqueline, Masson, Dominguez, Lam, Hérold and Brauner drawing cards so as to stave off boredom while waiting to depart for the New World. This new series, made for the original edition of Arcane 17 (at the end of 1944 or early 1945), confirms the prominent place assumed during the war by the young Chilian painter, who here was inspired by the 6^th, 7^th, 17^th and 18th Arcana. Le numéro de style ancien est entouré d'un décor de rinceaux bleu émaillé. Nord de France ? On peut évidemment symboliquement rapprocher cette plaque de céramique « d'Arcane 17 »

André Breton's handwritten manuscript in preparation for Arcane 17; pencil, undated, unsigned.

Research on astrology and esoterism. Arcane 17 bears witness to the continuing emergence of a body of knowledge into which Breton intently initiated himself. Here he browses the pages of the Illuminist Antoine Court de Gebelin, a fervent advocate of the idea of an original universal language who also sought to interpret the symbols of the Tarot. The central figures of the star and the woman [in the seventeenth Arcanum], of Isis of whom Mélusine is a reflection, appear here in all their learned nudity, before alchemy would restore them to literature. Quatre photographies de paysages prises par Elisa Breton lors du voyage au Canada en août 1944, dont une utilisée par André Breton pour illustrer le manuscrit d'Arcane 17.

Elisa a sans doute pris ces photographies avec son Rolleiflex qu'elle a ensuite prêté à Hans Bellmer. André Breton est venu au Canada depuis New-York où il était en exil. Son passage en Gaspésie et à Sainte-Agathe est raconté dans Arcane 17.

La photographie des fous de Bassan a été utilisée par André Breton pour enrichir son manuscrit d'Arcane 17 daté 20 août-20 octobre 1944 et rédigé à Percé-Sainte-Agathe. Elle a été collée par Breton page 6 du cahier manuscrit avec deux autres du même format et du même thème avec la légende : « Fous à Bonaventure ». [Fabrice Flahutez, 2010]

Île de Bonaventure en Gaspésie, une réserve d’oiseaux

André Breton et Elisa Claro quittent New York en août 1944 pour le Canada. Séjour à Montréal, à Québec puis en Gaspésie. Ils sont sur la péninsule de Gaspé du 17 au 19 août puis à Percé du 20 août au 21 septembre d’où ils visitent l’île de Bonaventure, puis se rendent dans les Laurentindes de Montréal, à Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, une région de montagne et de lacs, jusqu’à la fin octobre. C’est là qu’il écrit Arcane 17.
